Biography of Nicole Miller

Nicole Miller is an American designer and entrepreneur, wife, and mother, born in 1952 in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in Lenox, Massachusetts. Her father, an engineer at General Electric, had a significant influence on Nicole, who believes she developed her ability to construct clothing from her father's engineering mindset. On the other hand, her mother, who was French, disliked living in America and insisted that her daughter dress in the French style.

Education and Career

Nicole Miller attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design. She then spent a year studying at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris, focusing on draping techniques and classical clothing modeling.

After completing her education, Miller interned with renowned New York designer Clovis Ruffin. She later became the head designer at P.J. Walsh, a dress manufacturing company, personally hired by the company's president, Bud Konheim. Konheim stated that one of the reasons he hired Miller was her belief that design and business could and should be a successful combination.

In 1982, with Konheim's assistance, Nicole opened her own company, Nicole Miller, using her name as the brand. The first Nicole Miller store opened in 1986 on Madison Avenue. Today, the brand has grown to include twenty boutiques in major U.S. cities and departments in prestigious department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, and Nordstrom. Additionally, Nicole creates a large collection for J.C. Penney and a home textile collection for Bed, Bath and Beyond. The company's annual sales exceed $650 million.

Design Style and Recognition

Nicole Miller's modern design is known for its bold prints and patterns. Her signature designs often feature either black clothing or vibrant colors, with meticulous attention to detail and proportion. Her models represent a timeless, sexy classic style, ranging from cocktail dresses to wedding gowns. Miller draws inspiration for her collections from art, cinema, mid-20th century architecture, as well as contemporary art and exotic cultures.

Many celebrities, including Angelica Huston, Beyonce Knowles, Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Leann Rimes, Lauren Hutton, Jennifer Stone, Susan Sarandon, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, and Eva Longoria, have been seen wearing Nicole Miller designs.

Personal Life

In 1996, Nicole Miller married financier Kim Taipale in a ceremony officiated by the then-mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani. They have one son and divide their time between Tribeca, one of New York City's neighborhoods, and a country house in Sag Harbor. Miller is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and is an avid collector of contemporary art and French Art Nouveau furniture.
