Biography of Nikita Storozhev

Early Life and Education

Nikita Storozhev was a Soviet and French opera singer (bass) and a laureate of the International Tchaikovsky Competition (2nd prize, 1978). He was born into a family of Russian immigrants in Harbin. His grandfather, who worked as an accountant for the Chinese Eastern Railway, was acquainted with Fyodor Chaliapin, and his father was a friend of Alexander Vertinsky. When Nikita was five years old, his parents returned to the USSR and settled in Sverdlovsk. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at Ural University at the same time as Gennady Burbulis. Later, he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. After completing his studies, he worked at the Moscow Philharmonic.

Emigration and Career Abroad

Nikita Storozhev met his Mexican wife at the Moscow Conservatory, but the condition for their marriage was emigration to his wife's homeland. In 1983, he emigrated to Mexico. After several years in Mexico, Storozhev moved to Düsseldorf, Germany, where he had a three-year contract. He then relocated to Paris, where he obtained French citizenship. In the 2000s, he became an Associate Professor of Voice and Opera at the University of Texas at Austin.

Concerts and Collaborations

Despite his career abroad, Nikita Storozhev continued his concert activities and gave masterclasses. He performed together with Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Ruggero Raimondi, Katia Ricciarelli, and Nicolai Ghiaurov. Among the conductors he worked with were Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir John Pritchard, Claudio Abbado, Neeme Järvi, John Nelson, and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. In 1978, he was awarded the 2nd prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, sharing it with Valentin Pivovarov (the 1st prize was not awarded).
