Birth and Early Life
On November 20, 1910, Nikolai Ivanovich Abramchuk was born in Romanovka, Belarus, to a peasant family. After completing incomplete secondary school, he worked as a boilermaker at the Karl Marx Astrakhan Shipyard. In 1926, he graduated from the Factory Training School and attended a preparatory faculty for the Institute of Water Transport Engineers.
Military Service and the Great Patriotic War
In 1931, Abramchuk was drafted into the Red Army. In 1933, he enrolled in the Engels Military Aviation School of Pilots. After graduating in 1936, he served in the Far East.
With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War in 1941, Abramchuk fought on the Southwestern, Western, Stalingrad, and 1st Ukrainian Fronts. He flew sorties for ground attacks and provided cover for Soviet bombers and attack aircraft.
Battle of Stalingrad and Heroism
On August 1, 1942, Abramchuk defended the Stalingrad railway station. He single-handedly shot down two Ju-88 aircraft, capturing one crew member. By June 1943, as a squadron commander in the 894th Fighter Aviation Regiment, Abramchuk had flown 239 combat sorties and shot down 11 enemy aircraft.
Hero of the Soviet Union
For his courage and heroism, Abramchuk was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on October 9, 1943. He received the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 1239).
Post-War Career
After the war, Abramchuk continued his service in the Air Force, flying jet aircraft. He retired in 1954 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He settled in Kyiv and decorated with the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner (twice), and the Order of the Red Star.
Legacy and Honors
Nikolai Ivanovich Abramchuk passed away on February 1, 1974, and was buried in the Lukyanovskoye Military Cemetery in Kyiv. A monument stands in his honor there.
