Nikolai Danilovich: A Valiant Tanker and Heroic Pilot

Tanker of the Volkhov Front

As Captain of the 50th Separate Guards Tank Regiment, Nikolai Danilovich fought valiantly on the Volkhov Front. Leading his command, he spearheaded an attack against German positions near Lake Beloye with the support of the 374th Rifle Division. Even after his tanks sustained heavy artillery fire, Danilovich's regiment defended their positions tenaciously, firing from their immobilized vehicles. They courageously held out for four days, blowing up an enemy ammunition depot and suppressing a 105mm artillery battery. Amidst the intense fighting, Danilovich and his crew skillfully restored their damaged tank's mobility and withdrew from the battlefield. For his extraordinary bravery, he was awarded the Order of Suvorov III degree.

Heroic Pilot

Prior to his service as a tanker, Nikolai Danilovich served as a pilot on June 18, 1941. Despite strict orders to avoid provocation, he fearlessly intercepted a German aircraft that crossed the border. With deft maneuvers, he forced the enemy plane to crash just meters from Soviet territory, landing within sight of both sides.

Arrest and Redemption

Danilovich's actions resulted in his immediate arrest and a death sentence for provoking war. However, fate intervened when on the following day, his exceptional skills as a pilot once again proved invaluable. He single-handedly shot down another enemy aircraft, effectively nullifying the previous charges. His bravery and unwavering dedication to his country earned him widespread recognition.
