Early Life and Education
Nikolay Yakovlevich But was born on a farm in the Sumy region of Ukraine in 1930. His family moved to Taganrog in 1934, where he witnessed the Nazi occupation during World War II. From a young age, he showed a passion for art, particularly historical battles.
Artistic Training
After graduating from high school, But studied at the Rostov Art School (1945-1949), where he created his first triptych on the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. He continued his education at the Kharkiv Art Institute and completed his studies with a monumental painting on the defense of the Brest Fortress (1953-1957).
Multiple Talents
While pursuing his art education, But also excelled in drama. He briefly considered acting but ultimately chose painting. His talent for recitation won him a silver medal at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow in 1956.

But's diploma painting on the Brest Fortress defense was recognized and recommended for the "40 Years of the USSR Armed Forces" exhibition. He was invited to join the M.B. Grekov Studio of Military Artists in 1958.
Monumental Art Innovation
During his time at the studio, But participated in the creation of the first Soviet panorama, "The Battle of Stalingrad" (1958-1982). This work earned him the Soviet Peace Fund's Medal of Honor. But also contributed to the restoration of the panorama "The Battle of Borodino" in the 1960s.
Ajiyushkay Catacombs
The Ajiyushkay Catacombs became a recurring theme in But's work. He first visited the site in 1960 and created over 150 paintings, drawings, and sketches based on it. His "Ajiyushkay. 1942" series depicted the heroic resistance of Soviet soldiers in the catacombs during World War II.
