Nikolai Sergeyevich Grekov: A Life in Aviation

Born on February 15, 1950, in Kirghiz SSR, Nikolai Grekov embarked on a distinguished career in aviation.

Early Life and Education

Grekov graduated from Krasnooktyabrsk Secondary School No. 1 in 1967. He went on to excel at the Armavir Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots (VVAUL) PVO, graduating with honors and a gold medal in 1971 as a flight engineer specializing in Aviation Command. In 1988, he earned a degree in Operational-Tactical Aviation Command from the Gagarin Air Force Academy.

Military Service

Grekov served as a pilot in the 28th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Moscow PVO District from 1971 to 1974. He progressed through the ranks, becoming a senior pilot, flight commander, and squadron commander by 1976. Throughout his career, he was promoted to the ranks of Lieutenant, Senior Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel.

Work at Russian State Research Institute of Space Training Center (RGNII TsPK)

In 1986, Grekov joined RGNII TsPK as a flight director and lead engineer for the cosmonaut unit. He served as head of the 3rd Department from 1993 to 2003 before retiring from active duty.

Cosmonaut Training

Selected as a cosmonaut candidate in 1978, Grekov underwent general space training until 1982. To prepare for the Buran program, he trained as a test pilot in Akhhtubinsk from 1978 to 1979. However, due to stricter medical requirements, he was removed from the cosmonaut program in 1986.

Honors and Achievements

Grekov received medals for his military service and contributions to international cooperation. He holds a 3rd degree in gymnastics and has been an avid radio enthusiast.

Personal Life

Married to Olga Grekova (née Rodionova), Grekov has two daughters and a son. His father, Sergey Grekov, was an auto column manager, while his mother, Valentina Grekova (née Mishina), was a chief accountant.
