Early Life and Education
Born on October 8, 1956, in South Bend, Indiana, the future astronaut attended Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. She pursued further education through the University of Oklahoma and subsequently received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Purdue University in 1975. In 1977, she earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the same institution. Her academic journey culminated in a Doctorate in Aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987.
Pre-Astronaut Career
Between 1973 and 1975, she worked at the NASA Johnson Space Center. She resumed her tenure there from 1977 to 1987. During this period, she also spent several years with Orbital Sciences Corporation.
Selection and Training
In January 1990, she was chosen as part of the NASA Astronaut Corps. She underwent comprehensive spaceflight training at the Johnson Space Center until July 1991.
Space Missions
STS-57 (1993)Serving as a Mission Specialist on the Endeavour spacecraft, she participated in the repair of the EURECA research satellite and conducted scientific experiments using the Spacehab module.
STS-63 (1995)
Again as a Mission Specialist, this time aboard the Discovery spacecraft, she assisted in the first rendezvous with the Russian space station Mir.
STS-83 (1997)
As part of the Columbia's crew, she spent several days conducting microgravity experiments in the Spacehab module, but the mission was cut short due to power issues.
STS-94 (1997)
She returned to the Columbia spacecraft for an extended stay in order to conduct additional microgravity experiments in the Spacehab module.
STS-99 (2000)
Her fifth and final spaceflight took place aboard the Endeavour spacecraft. During this mission, she aided in topographic mapping of the Earth's surface.
Awards and Recognition
For her exceptional contributions to space exploration, she received numerous NASA Space Flight Medals (1993, 1995, 1997x2, 2000).
Personal Life
She is married and enjoys volleyball, dancing, and reading science fiction.
