Early Life and Military Career

Born into a priest's family, Mykola Kapustiansky graduated from the Yekaterinoslav Theological Seminary (1899) and the Odessa Infantry Junker School (1904). He excelled at the Imperial Nikolaev Military Academy (1912), completing a thesis on aviation military reconnaissance and earning the Order of St. Anna, 3rd class.

Service in the Russian Military

Kapustiansky served in the 105th Orenburg Regiment in Vilnius and participated in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) and World War I. After graduating from military academy, he commanded a company in his regiment and lectured on military administration at the Vilnius Military School.

Formation of Ukrainian Forces

In 1917, Kapustiansky became involved in the formation of Ukrainian military units. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the 1st Ukrainian Infantry Division under Pavlo Skoropadsky. He was later appointed Chief of Staff of the 11th Army and then Chief of Staff of the North-Western Front, both fighting against the Bolsheviks.

Ukrainian Independence and Exile

After the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) declared independence, Kapustiansky served as Chief of Operations and Deputy First Quartermaster General of the UNR Army. He was interned in a Polish camp in 1921 before moving to Paris in 1923.

Involvement in Ukrainian Nationalism

In Paris, Kapustiansky became a founding member of the Ukrainian Military Historical Society and the Ukrainian National Council in France. He played a leading role at the First Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists in 1929, becoming Deputy Head of the Presidium and later head of the military department within the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN).

World War II and Post-War Activities

During World War II, Kapustiansky accompanied German troops into Ukraine as part of the OUN's "Marching Groups." He became Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian National Council in Kyiv and founded the Ukrainian Military Society named after Petro Polubotko. After the war, he moved to Munich and continued to be active in Ukrainian nationalist circles.

Legacy and Honors

Kapustiansky became War Minister of the "UNR in Exile" in 1948 and held military ranks including General-Lieutenant and General-Colonel. He participated in several Congresses of the OUN (M) and became Head of the Senate of the Ukrainian Nationalist Movement in 1964. In 1951, he founded the Military Scientific Society. Kapustiansky's military and nationalist contributions have left a lasting impact on Ukrainian history.
