Early Life and Military Career
Prince Vasily Golitsyn, a descendant of the illustrious Golitsyn family, was born to Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Golitsyn and Zinaida Vasilyevna (née Ladomirskaya). He graduated from the Page Corps in 1877 and was commissioned as a Cornet in the Leib-Guard Cossack Regiment. During the Russo-Turkish War, he served as an adjutant to General Gurko, earning the Order of St. Anne 4th class with the inscription "for bravery" and the Order of St. Stanislaus 3rd class with swords and bow.
Civic and Museum Career
After retiring from the military in 1885, Golitsyn became involved in civic affairs. He served as Novgorod-Seversk's District Marshal of the Nobility in 1896 and as Chernihiv Province's Governor Marshal of the Nobility from 1905 to 1908. He also held the positions of Honorary World Judge, Honorary Trustee of the Novgorod-Seversk Gymnasium, and Honorary Chairman of the Novgorod-Seversk Agricultural Society.
In 1908, Golitsyn was appointed Stallmeister and, in 1910, Director of the Moscow Public and Rumyantsev Museums. Under his leadership, the Rumyantsev Museum Library received its first state funding for collection development. He oversaw the construction of a new picture gallery, book depository, and reading room for 300 people. To commemorate the return of Leo Tolstoy's manuscripts from the Historical Museum, the Tolstoy Study was established.
Distinguished Service as Museum Director
Golitsyn played a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage during the tumultuous years following the October Revolution. He remained Director of the Rumyantsev Museum and sent his staff on missions to safeguard regional collections. In 1921, he became Head of the Art Department of the State Rumyantsev Museum, later renamed the State Library of the USSR after V. I. Lenin.
Family and Legacy
Golitsyn married Countess Praskovya Mikhailovna Tolstoy in 1880. They had five children: Zinaida, Mikhail, Dmitry, Maria, and Nikolai. His son Mikhail served in the Red Army but was later executed.
Honors and Awards
In recognition of his contributions, Golitsyn was awarded numerous Russian orders, including the Order of St. Anne 2nd class, St. Stanislaus 2nd class, and St. Vladimir 3rd class. He also received the Romanian Iron Cross.
Death and Legacy
Vasily Golitsyn passed away in Moscow in 1926. He is remembered as a distinguished museum director and a dedicated advocate for the preservation of cultural heritage.
