Nikolai Ivanovich Kondratenko

Early Life and Career

Born in 1940 in the village of Plastunovskaya in Krasnodar Krai, Nikolai Ivanovich Kondratenko grew up in a peasant family. After graduating high school, he joined the local collective farm, "Krasnaya Zvezda," where he worked until being drafted into the Soviet Army in 1959. Upon completing his military service, Kondratenko enrolled in the Kuban Agricultural Institute, graduating in 1966 with a degree in agronomy. He returned to "Krasnaya Zvezda" and became an agronomist.

Political Career

In 1969, Kondratenko entered politics, joining the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). He held various positions within the party, including General Director of the North Caucasus Sugar Industry Association and Head of the Department of Agriculture for the Krasnodar Krai Committee of the CPSU. In 1987, he was elected Chairman of the Krasnodar Krai Executive Committee and later became Chairman of the Krai Council of People's Deputies.

1991 Coup Attempt and its Aftermath

During the August 1991 coup attempt, Kondratenko opposed the actions of the plotters. His position led to his dismissal by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). However, this decision was later overturned. Kondratenko stepped down from his post as Chairman of the Krai Council and worked as the Deputy Director of Construction and Development at "Rezervtabak."

1993 Elections and the Russian Parliament

In 1993, Kondratenko was elected to the Federation Council, representing Krasnodar Krai. He served on the Committee on Agrarian Policy.

1995 and 1996 Elections

In 1995, Kondratenko ran for the State Duma as a member of the "Vlast narodu!" (Power to the People!) bloc. However, he later withdrew and ran from the "Otechestvo" (Fatherland) electoral association. He was defeated by Aleksandr Tkachev. In October 1996, Kondratenko ran for Governor of Krasnodar Krai. Despite winning a majority of votes in the first round, the election was declared invalid due to low voter turnout. After the election law was amended, a second round was held in December 1996, in which Kondratenko was elected with 82% of the vote.

Governorship of Krasnodar Krai

As Governor of Krasnodar Krai, Kondratenko implemented various economic reforms and social programs. He remained in office until 2001.

Later Life and Legacy

After his governorship, Kondratenko continued to be involved in politics and public life. He founded the "Otechestvo" movement in 1994, which later merged with the "Yabloko" party. Kondratenko's contributions to the development of Krasnodar Krai are widely recognized, and he is considered one of the most influential political figures in the region's history.
