Antonio Gutiérrez de la Fuente: A Peruvian Military and Political Leader
Early Life and Military Career
Antonio Gutiérrez de la Fuente was born in the province of Tarapaca (now in Chile) in the late 18th century. His father, Luis Gutiérrez-de-Otero-y-Martinez-del-Campo, was a Spanish citizen. Gutiérrez de la Fuente joined the Spanish army in 1813 and fought against the independence movements sweeping through South America. In 1817, he was captured by José de San Martín's troops and imprisoned in Buenos Aires.
Liberation and Political Involvement
After his release from prison, Gutiérrez de la Fuente returned to Peru and actively supported the movement to overthrow President José de la Mar. He was appointed vice-president under La Mar's successor, Manuel Salazar y Baquíjano.
Presidency of Peru
In June 1829, Gutiérrez de la Fuente became President of Peru. His presidency lasted until September of that year, when he was replaced by Agustín Gamarra.
Later Career and Achievements
Gutiérrez de la Fuente continued to play an active role in Peruvian politics and military affairs. He participated in the civil war of 1834, the war against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, and the years of anarchy (1842-1843), during which he served as commander-in-chief and minister of war.
In addition to his military and political career, Gutiérrez de la Fuente also served as mayor of Lima twice (1864-1866 and 1868-1869) and as senator for Tarapaca (1872-1878). He passed away in Lima in 1878.
Personal Life
Gutiérrez de la Fuente was married to Mercedes Subirat-y-Cocio, and they had two children: Santa Cruz Gutiérrrez de la Fuente y Subirat and Máxima Amalia Gutiérrrez de la Fuente y Subirat.
