Early Life and Education
Serhii S. Bilenky was born in Ukraine and developed a passion for history, particularly feudal Russia and Russian numismatics. He graduated with honors from the history department of Kyiv University in 1956.
Work in the Central Scientific Library and the Hermitage
From 1956 to 1960, Bilenky worked in the Central Scientific Library of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (AN UССР). In 1960, he enrolled in the post-graduate program at the Department of Numismatics in the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, studying under Igor G. Spassky.
Aspirant and Research Fellow at the Hermitage
In 1963/1964, Bilenky completed his aspirantura program at the Hermitage. He remained there as a research fellow, completing his doctoral dissertation. In 1965, he defended his кандидат dissertation at the Institute of History of Ukraine of the AN UССР, becoming a research fellow there.
Academic Career and Contributions
In 1972, Bilenky successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on "The History of the Monetary Market in Ukraine from the 9th to the 18th Century." From 1982 to 1996, he led the sector of the history of Kievan Rus at the Institute of History of Ukraine. Throughout his career, he published approximately 500 works, including 40 monographs.
Membership and Recognition
Bilenky was a member-correspondent of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1995), a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology (2001), and a Honored Scientist of Ukraine (1996). He was also part of the editorial board of the academic journal "Ancient Rus: Issues of Medieval Studies."
Mentorship and Legacy
Bilenky's academic lineage included his wife, M. V. Skryzhinska, and his mother, E. Ch. Skryzhinska. As a mentor, he supervised nine candidates and four doctors of science. His research initially focused on monetary circulation, markets, and accounting systems.
