Life and Work of Professor Mykola Kovalsky
Early Life and EducationMykola Pavlovich Kovalsky was born on March 19, 1929, in the historic town of Ostroh (now Rivne Oblast, Ukraine). His family had a deep-rooted connection to education and played a significant role in Volhynia's spiritual development. Kovalsky's aunt, Maria Kikey, was married to a prominent figure in the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR). His paternal uncle, Nikolai Nikolaevich Kovalsky, was a public and political activist who served as a member of the Ukrainian Central Council and later as the Chairman of the Ukrainian Central Committee in Warsaw.
In 1946, Kovalsky graduated from Ostróg's Secondary School No. 1 with a gold medal. He then pursued his education at the local pedagogical college, graduating with honors in 1947. From 1947 to 1952, he studied at the History Department of Lviv State University. After completing his undergraduate studies, he entered the university's graduate program and defended his doctoral dissertation in 1958.
Academic Career
Kovalsky began his academic career at the Ukrainian State Museum of Ethnography and Art Crafts in Lviv in 1959. In 1963, he moved to Kryvyi Rih and was elected Associate Professor at the Kryvyi Rih General Science Department of Dnipropetrovsk State University, where he taught until 1967.
In 1967, Kovalsky joined the Dnipropetrovsk State University (now Oles Honchar Dnipro National University). From 1977 to 1994, he headed the Department of Historiography and Source Studies, which became a leading center for the development of historical science in Ukraine under his guidance. Kovalsky established his own scientific school and mentored over two dozen doctoral and candidates of science. In 1984, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic of sources for the history of Ukraine in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Revival of Ostroh Academy
In 1994, Kovalsky returned to his hometown and initiated the revival of Ostroh Academy (now National University of Ostroh Academy). He became the academy's first Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs and played a pivotal role in building its scientific infrastructure. His students from Dnipropetrovsk accompanied him, continuing to teach and expand the scientific school he had founded.
Legacy
For his contributions to the city of Ostroh, Kovalsky was granted the title of Honorary Citizen and a street was named after him. The Department of History at the National University of Ostroh Academy also bears his name.

Kovalsky was recognized with numerous accolades, including:- Badge "Excellence in Education of Ukraine" (1999)
