Early Life and Military Service
Mykola Mykolaevich Martyniuk was born on May 18, 1917, in Voloshysk, Ukraine. In September 1936, he volunteered to serve in the army and began his military career.
World War II
During the Great Patriotic War, Martyniuk commanded the 435th Regiment. On the night of November 18-19, 1941, German forces attacked the banks of the Volkhov River. The 435th Regiment, along with the 505th and 666th Regiments, defended the left flank. Their courageous resistance and strategic planning prevented the enemy from encircling Leningrad in what became known as the Tikhvin Operation.
Post-War Career
In 1943, Martyniuk's exceptional leadership during an attack near the Slavyanka River earned him the Order of the Red Star. In 1944, his reconnaissance efforts prior to the assault on the Perekop Isthmus aided in the destruction of numerous enemy targets, leading to his award of the Order of the Patriotic War II degree.
