Nikolai Vtorov, a prominent Russian businessman and industrialist, earned the moniker "Russian Morgan" for his astute business acumen. According to Forbes, he amassed the largest fortune in Russia at the turn of the 20th century, estimated at over 60 million gold rubles.
Early Life and Inheritance
Born into a wealthy merchant family in Irkutsk, Nikolai inherited a substantial fortune of 13.6 million rubles from his father, a first-guild merchant. In 1897, the Vtorov family relocated to Moscow.
Business Empire
Upon his father's passing in 1911, Nikolai inherited the family business, "A. F. Vtorova synovya," a major trading enterprise in Siberia. He embarked on a rapid expansion, acquiring numerous banks and companies. Vtorov owned several notable businesses, including A.O. "Postavschik," which specialized in military contracts, Moscow Industrial Bank, and the Donetsk-Yuryevsky Metallurgical Society.
Industrial Pioneer
Vtorov's entrepreneurial spirit extended to establishing the first chemical dye factory in Russia and the "Elektrostal" plant. In partnership with Ryabushinsky, he founded "AMO," which later became the renowned "ZIL" automobile factory.
World War I Profits
During World War I, Vtorov's military contracts generated enormous profits for his businesses.
Post-Revolutionary Era
Following the October Revolution, Vtorov initially expressed loyalty to the Bolsheviks. However, he was assassinated under mysterious circumstances in May 1918. His vast fortune and legacy ended abruptly, leaving behind a profound impact on Russian industry and finance.
