Childhood and Early Life

Francesco Castelnuovo was born on October 28, 1936, in Lecco, Italy. Growing up in a modest household with two brothers and a sister, young Nino served as an altar boy and excelled in gymnastics and dance. He worked as a painter, mechanic, and laborer in his teenage years before leaving home at 19 to pursue acting in Milan.

Acting Career

Castelnuovo's screen debut came in 1957 on a children's television program. His first cinematic appearance was a minor role in the mystery film "Il Mistero della Sfinge Nera" in 1959. Over the next five years, he gained experience in Italian films, television shows, and even American Disney projects, showcasing his versatility in acting, singing, guitar playing, and poetry.

Breakout Role in "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"

In 1964, Castelnuovo's life took a pivotal turn when French director Jacques Demy cast him in the lead role of "Guy Foucher" in the musical melodrama "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." Alongside a young Catherine Deneuve, Castelnuovo's performance earned critical acclaim and catapulted him to international stardom. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for two Academy Awards.

Career After "Cherbourg"

Castelnuovo attempted to establish an international career following his "Cherbourg" success but faced challenges. Despite notable roles in "The New World" and "Reward," both films underperformed commercially. He subsequently focused on working with Italian directors and gained widespread popularity at home. Castelnuovo also occasionally appeared in erotic films, such as "Camille 2000" and "Dangerous Age."

Late Career and Theatre

As his cinematic career in Italy plateaued, Castelnuovo turned to theatre and European productions. The British drama "The English Patient," starring Ralph Fiennes, became one of his most recognized international works. His final film appearance was in 2016.

Personal Life and Health Challenges

In his later years, Castelnuovo married Daniela Trebbi, an Italian actress 19 years his junior. They welcomed a son, Lorenzo, but their marriage eventually ended in divorce. In 2005, Castelnuovo developed glaucoma, which gradually led to complete blindness.

Second Marriage and Legal Battles

Castelnuovo found love again with Italian actress Maria Cristina Di Nicola, who starred in the television series "Murder." They married in 2010, despite their age difference. Di Nicola became a devoted advocate for her husband in his time of need.

Financial Struggles and Death

Despite Castelnuovo's disability, he faced financial difficulties due to a lack of support from the government. In the final years of his life, his wife waged a public battle, criticizing the state for its indifference. Castelnuovo died on September 6, 2021, just shy of his 85th birthday. The cause of death was not disclosed.
