Biography of Noël S. Oswald

Noël S. Oswald is a young Hungarian photographer who gained fame after publishing several of her works on the popular internet platform, Flickr. She was born in Budapest, Hungary, and continues to live and work there. According to Oswald herself, photography was a hobby she stumbled upon by chance. She had ideas for photographs in her mind but had no experience or technical knowledge at the time. At the age of 22, she picked up a camera for the first time and conducted her first photoshoot. Surprisingly, her lack of experience worked in her favor, and her innate shyness and pessimism only added to her popularity.

Overnight, Noël became a globally renowned photographer, and even her profile caption, "I have only been doing photography for a year. I'm not a professional photographer!" couldn't change that. Her first work, "Prejudice," remains the most successful image in her portfolio to this day, although Oswald admitted that its success was unpredictable. Although all her photographs appear realistic, each one involves hours of work in graphic editors. For example, the bird depicted in the photograph was added later. Reflecting on it, Oswald joked, "I was afraid people would notice and laugh, calling me ignorant. I worked on a photograph that I named 'Prejudice' and feared people would judge me too harshly. What irony!"

All of Oswald's works are black and white because, according to her, colors distract from the main idea of the photograph. Each photograph is not just a snapshot but a complete picture that evokes a range of emotions in the viewer, from unbridled sadness, as seen in "Dream," to intense claustrophobic sensations, as experienced when viewing the photograph titled "Caught."

According to the photographer, the idea behind a photograph is not what the author felt when taking it, but rather to allow individuals to understand and interpret it for themselves. Everyone can have their own interpretation of the works, and each interpretation is valid. Despite the candid nature of some of her images, especially her recent works on her Flickr page, they can hardly be called erotic; rather, through nudity, the artist attempts to showcase the imperfection, vulnerability, and openness of humans to a harsh gray world.

In contemporary photography, Noël S. Oswald truly stands apart. On her personal page, she only has 19 photographs and does not share any personal information about her life and work. The only external link on her page is to her Facebook profile, where anyone can appreciate her work and leave their comments.
