With her mother working as a nurse and her father being a musician and poet, it was no surprise that Dunn decided to dedicate her life to film and television.

Dunn graduated from the Chicago Institute of Arts and also underwent training at the Gene Sheldon Acting Workshop. In 1985, she began her professional career on television, initially participating in various shows and programs. However, it was her appearance on "Saturday Night Live" that brought her recognition.
