Early Life and Fighting RootsNorifumi "Kid" Yamamoto was born on March 15, 1977, in Kawasaki, Japan. He attended high school in the United States, representing Marcos de Niza High School in wrestling. He trained under Townsend Saunders, Tricia Saunders, and briefly with Choi Mu Bae.
MMA and Hero's Success
Yamamoto made his MMA debut in 2001 with Shooto, quickly gaining notoriety for his aggressive, well-rounded style and controversial persona. Despite a setback against Stephen Palling, he went on a three-fight win streak, culminating in a debut victory over Tony Valente at Hero's (K-1) in 2004. Yamamoto's popularity skyrocketed that year as he recorded impressive victories over Kazuya Yasuhiro, Ian James Schaffa, and Jadamba Narantungalag. He cemented his legacy in Hero's by winning the Middleweight Grand Prix, defeating Genki Sudo, Caol Uno, and Royler Gracie.
Record-Setting KO and Olympic Ambitions
On May 3, 2006, Yamamoto scored the fastest knockout in major MMA history, finishing Kazuyuki Miyata with a flying knee just four seconds into the fight. In early 2007, he briefly retired from MMA to pursue his childhood dream of representing Japan in wrestling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. However, he suffered a dislocated elbow in the qualifying tournament, crushing his Olympic aspirations.
UFC Career and Health Struggles
Yamamoto made his UFC debut in 2011, but faced a series of setbacks. He lost decisions to Demetrious Johnson, Darren Uyenoyama, and Vaughan Lee, and was forced to submit to Lee's triangle choke and armbar in 2012. In 2018, Yamamoto announced his cancer diagnosis. He fought valiantly against the disease but passed away on September 18, 2018, at the age of 41.
