Norman Mailer, an American writer and journalist, gained worldwide recognition for his novel "The Naked and the Dead," which was published in 1948. He was born on January 31, 1923.
Early Life and Career
After studying at Harvard University and serving in the army, Mailer released his novel "The Naked and the Dead," which received international acclaim. This book was published in 1948. Shortly after, Mailer went to study at the Sorbonne.
Notable Works and Awards
In 1968, Mailer published the book "The Armies of the Night," for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in the United States. He received another Pulitzer Prize for his novel "The Executioner's Song," published in 1979.
Order of the Legion of Honour
In 2006, Mailer was honored with the highest state award of France, the Order of the Legion of Honour. The French ambassador to the United States, Jean-David Levitte, presented the order on behalf of French President Jacques Chirac. Mailer was recognized for his contribution to literature. Less than 500 Americans have been awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour in its 200 years of existence.
