Biography of Norrie May-Welby

Norrie May-Welby was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1961. However, it was only in his early childhood that it could be definitively said that Norrie was born male. Later on, Norrie's gender underwent some transformations. At the age of 7, Norrie moved with his parents to Perth, Western Australia.

A Gender Transition

On April 3, 1989, Norrie underwent gender reassignment surgery, transitioning to female. However, becoming a woman did not solve Norrie's issues with his sexual orientation. Simply put, Norrie did not enjoy being a woman, just as he did not enjoy being a man. As a result, Norrie stopped taking hormonal treatments that had supported his female identity.

A Unique Identity

Determining Norrie May-Welby's true gender identity proved to be impossible. In terms of gender differences, Norrie became neither male nor female. Norrie believed that since they didn't identify as either gender, it would be inappropriate to have a gender designation on their official documents. To address this issue, Norrie approached the authorities of New South Wales in 2010, placing them in a challenging situation. Eventually, the authorities agreed to Norrie's request, and their documents reflected their genderless identity.

The Impact and Support

Norrie's case was unprecedented and received attention from various organizations. The Gender Trust, a British organization, provided significant support to Norrie. Norrie also became a member of the organization Sex and Gender Education (SAGE), which supports gender transformation campaigns. The Gender Trust representatives mentioned that many people dream of abandoning their assigned gender, making Norrie somewhat fortunate.

Norrie May-Welby stated, "The terms 'man' or 'woman' don't fit me. The simplest solution would be to have no gender designation." Consequently, Norrie became the first modern person whose gender was officially marked as "not specified" in their documents. This case also made Australia the first country to practice the "non-specified gender" marker in official documents.
