Nurdin Boukhari: From Rotterdam to Riyadh
Nurdin Boukhari, a Dutch footballer of Moroccan descent, began his career in the youth academies of Neptunus and HOV in Rotterdam. He then moved to the youth setup of Sparta Rotterdam, eventually breaking into the first team in 1999.
Sparta Rotterdam and the Dutch National Team
Boukhari made his debut for Sparta Rotterdam on February 9, 2000, in a 4-0 loss to AZ. In his first season, he scored 3 goals in 17 Eredivisie appearances. He played a total of 76 games and scored 13 goals for Sparta.
In November 2001, Boukhari made his debut for the Morocco national team in a friendly match against Zambia.
Ajax Amsterdam
In 2002, Boukhari signed a four-year contract with Ajax Amsterdam. He made his debut on September 1, 2002, against Groningen and went on to score 6 goals in 22 appearances for the club in the 2002/03 season.
Loan to NAC Breda
In 2003, Boukhari was loaned to NAC Breda, where he played 28 matches and scored 5 goals.
Return to Ajax and Super Cup Success
After returning from his loan spell, Boukhari re-established himself in the Ajax first team. He played a total of 69 games for Ajax, scoring 14 goals. During his time at the club, he won the Dutch Super Cup in 2002 and 2005 and the Dutch Cup in 2006.
Stint with Nantes and Return to Sparta
In 2006, Boukhari moved to French club Nantes. He played only 9 games and scored 2 goals for the team before being loaned to AZ in January 2007. After returning to Nantes, he refused to play for the club, which had been relegated to the second division.
On July 7, 2007, Boukhari returned to Sparta Rotterdam on a three-year contract. After one season, he signed for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad. However, Sparta never received the transfer fee from Al-Ittihad, which claimed to be considering reversing the deal due to Boukhari's poor physical condition. Sparta declined to welcome him back to the club.
Return to NAC Breda and Career Twilight
In 2008, Boukhari left Al-Ittihad and returned to the Netherlands, where he trained with his former club NAC Breda in December. In January 2009, he signed a contract with NAC Breda until the end of the 2008/09 season.
Boukhari retired from professional football in 2009, playing for the amateur club Magreb '90 in Utrecht until 2011.
