Early Life and Wrestling Career

Born in 1997, Nugzari Tsurtsumia emerged as a prodigious wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. In 2014, he clinched the bronze medal at the European Cadet Championships, followed by a silver at the World Junior Championships and a bronze at the European Junior Championships in 2015.

Youth Championships and International Success

Tsurtsumia's success continued into 2016 with his victory as the European Junior Champion and bronze at the World Junior Championships. As a junior, he once again earned a European Junior Championship bronze in 2017.

Senior Level Breakthrough and World Championship Title

In 2018, Tsurtsumia made his mark at the senior level, capturing a bronze medal at the European Championships in Kaspiysk. His momentum carried over to the World Championships in Budapest, where he took home another bronze. The pinnacle of his career came in 2019 when he emerged victorious at the Pre-Olympic World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, claiming the gold medal in the 55 kg weight class.

Continued Achievements and European Bronze

Tsurtsumia's success continued in 2020 with a bronze medal at the European Championships in Rome. In the 55 kg weight class, he defeated Romanian wrestler Florin Titu in the bronze medal match.

Tragic Loss

In July 2024, tragedy struck as Nugzari Tsurtsumia passed away at his home in Khobi. Suspected to be suicide, his death came after the loss of his father, brother, and mother within a six-month period. The wrestling community and beyond mourned the loss of a young and exceptional athlete.
