Nusrat Yusif oghlu Khalilov
Distinguished Geologist and AcademicianNusrat Yusif oghlu Khalilov was an eminent Azerbaijani geologist, professor, and doctor of Geological and Mineralogy Sciences. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to the field of petroleum geology, particularly in the exploration of oil and gas reserves in the Caspian Sea region.
Early Life and Military Service
Khalilov was born on May 9, 1925, in Geokchay, Azerbaijan. In 1943, he volunteered for the Red Army and served on the front lines with the 77th Division. He fought in battles from Melitopol to the Dnieper River, where he was wounded on December 23, 1943. After recovering from his injury, he continued his service as a tankist with the 1st Belorussian Front, advancing through Minsk and Warsaw.
Education and Career
After the war, Khalilov returned to Baku and enrolled in the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry (now Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University), graduating in 1951 as a mining engineer-geologist. From 1951 to 1981, he worked in the Gurgan and Primorsky exploration drilling departments.
Scientific Contributions
Khalilov published extensively in various scientific journals between 1961 and 1962. His research provided the foundation for his doctoral dissertation, which he presented in 1962 on the subject of "Geological Structure and Oil and Gas Potential of the North-Western Part of the Absheron Archipelago."
In 1974, Khalilov defended his postdoctoral dissertation on "Geological Structure of the Baku Archipelago and Ways to Improve the Efficiency of Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Operations in Conditions of Abnormally High Reservoir Pressures." This groundbreaking study identified the causes of drilling complications and proposed specific recommendations for drilling technology, chemical additives, and mud weight adjustment.
Exploration and Discovery of Caspian Oilfields
Khalilov played a pivotal role in the discovery and development of several major oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea, including "Bank of Absheron," "Gum-deniz," and "Sangachal-Sea." In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the title of "Honored Geologist of the Azerbaijan SSR" in 1982.
Awards and Recognitions
Khalilov was a member of the Editorial Board of World Scientific Publishers and a Scientific Consultant to the World Organization for Scientific Cooperation (WOSCO). He received the WOSCO Gold Medal in 2010 for his "outstanding contribution to the development of science and education." Additionally, his name was included in the historical publication "Soldiers of the 20th Century" by the International Biographical Centre.
