Early Life and Education
Alfred Wegener, a renowned German geophysicist and meteorologist, was born on November 1, 1880, in Berlin, Germany. His father, a notable scientist, instilled a passion for science in young Wegener, who spent his childhood exploring the natural world and conducting experiments with his brother.
University Studies and Explorations
Wegener's academic journey began at the "C?lnisches Gymnasium" in Berlin, where he excelled in physics and chemistry. Despite initially pursuing astronomy, he later transferred to the University of Heidelberg and the University of Friedrich Wilhelm in Berlin, where he delved into mathematics, astronomy, and meteorology.
Aeronautical Research and Greenland Expeditions
After completing his studies, Wegener joined his brother at the Aeronautical Observatory in Berlin, where they conducted meteorological research using hot-air balloons. These flights ignited Wegener's passion for exploration and set the stage for his groundbreaking work in Greenland.
From 1906 to 1908 and 1912 to 1913, Wegener participated in expeditions to Greenland. These expeditions, led by polar explorer Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, allowed Wegener to study the northern coast of Greenland and develop his theories on continental drift.
Theory of Continental Drift
Wegener's time in Greenland proved transformative. Inspired by the similarities between the geological formations on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, he developed his revolutionary theory of continental drift. According to Wegener, the Earth's continents were not fixed but rather moved across the planet's surface over time.
Evidence and Opposition
Wegener supported his theory with a wealth of evidence, including the remarkable fit between the coastlines of Africa and South America. However, despite his compelling arguments, his ideas faced significant resistance from the scientific community.
The Missing Link
One of the main criticisms of Wegener's theory was its lack of an explanation for the mechanism behind continental drift. This obstacle was eventually addressed in the 1930s and 1940s by Scottish geologist Arthur Holmes, who proposed that mantle convection currents could provide the necessary force to move the continents.
Personal Life
In 1913, Wegener married Else K?ppen, the daughter of his close friend and renowned meteorologist Wladimir K?ppen. Together, they had three daughters: Hilda, Sophie-Katharina, and Hanna Charlotte. Sophie-Katharina later married Siegfried Uiberreither, Gauleiter of Styria.
Legacy and Recognition
Despite his early death in 1930, Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift has become one of the pillars of modern geology. His work revolutionized our understanding of the Earth's history and laid the foundation for plate tectonics theory.
