Oh My Girl: A Comprehensive Biography

Oh My Girl is a South Korean girl group formed by WM Entertainment. The group debuted on April 21, 2015, with their eponymous mini album. The group consists of 7 members: Hyojung, Mimi, YooA, Seunghee, Jiho, Binnie, and Arin. Jinny departed from the group on October 30, 2017.

2015: Debut with "Oh My Girl" and "Closer"

Oh My Girl was introduced as the sister group of labelmates B1A4. On March 29, 2015, the group's first photo teasers were released, featuring all eight members. On April 20, the group released their debut mini-album "Oh My Girl" and its lead single "Cupid." On the same day, they held their debut showcase. Oh My Girl officially debuted on SBS MTV's "The Show" on April 21.

On October 7, the group released their second mini-album "Closer" and its title track of the same name. On December 11, the group departed for the United States for a photoshoot and a performance in Los Angeles scheduled for December 12. However, they were denied entry into the US by customs officials. The group's management stated that customs officials mistook the group for underage prostitutes due to their stage costumes and detained them for 15 hours. US customs officials refuted the group's management's claims, stating that the group was denied entry for lack of work visas. Upon reviewing the group's luggage, customs realized that the group had arrived for a performance but did not have the appropriate visa. Additionally, customs officially denied that the group was "detained" for 15 hours, stating that the group was sent back to Korea on the first available flight with the same airline they arrived on.

#2016: "Pink Ocean," "Windy Day," "Listen to My Word," First Solo Concert "Summer Fairytale," and Jinny's Hiatus

Oh My Girl's third mini-album "Pink Ocean" was released on March 28, 2016, along with its title track "Liar Liar." On the same day, the group's official fanclub name was announced as "Miracle." The group promoted "Liar Liar" and "Step by Step" on music shows.

On May 26, 2016, "Pink Ocean" was re-released as "Windy Day." The album included two new songs: "Windy Day" and "Stupid in Love," as well as a Chinese version of "Liar Liar." On August 1, they released their summer special album "Listen to My Word," which featured four cover songs.

On August 20, Oh My Girl held their first solo concert "Summer Fairytale" in Seoul. Tickets for the concert sold out in three minutes, setting a record for a rookie girl group. On August 25, WM Entertainment announced that Jinny would temporarily suspend her activities with the group due to anorexia. The group continued promotions with seven members.

2017: "Coloring Book" and Jinny's Departure

On March 13, it was announced that the group's new album would be released in April. It was also announced that Jinny would not be participating in the album's promotions while she continued to receive treatment. WM Entertainment also reported that Jinny's condition had improved significantly and that their priority was her full recovery.

The group's fifth mini-album "Coloring Book" was released on April 3, along with its title track of the same name.

On October 30, WM Entertainment confirmed that due to Jinny's ongoing health issues, her contract with the company had been terminated and she had officially left the group.

#2018: "Secret Garden," "Banana Allergy Monkey," "Remember Me," and Fall Concert "Fairy Tales"

On December 23, 2017, WM Entertainment announced the group's return on January 9 with their fifth mini-album "Secret Garden." Oh My Girl held their second solo concert titled "Oh My Girl's Secret Garden." Tickets went on sale on December 28 and sold out within two minutes, proving their popularity, completely selling out the concert from their previous year. The six-day concert was held from January 22 to 26 at Shinsegae Mesa in Seoul. On January 23, Oh My Girl won their first music show award on "The Show" and their second on "Show Champion" on January 24 with "Secret Garden."

On April 2, the group's official sub-unit Oh My Girl Banana debuted with the title track "Banana Allergy Monkey" featuring members Hyojung, Binnie, and Arin.

In June, the group signed with Ariola Japan, a label under Sony Music Japan. The sub-unit Banhana made their Japanese debut in August with the Japanese version of "Banana Allergy Monkey."

On August 24, WM Entertainment confirmed that the group would make their Korean comeback. Oh My Girl released their sixth mini-album, "Remember Me," on September 10 with its title track of the same name. On October 20 and 21, the group held their 2nd concert "Fairy Tales."

#2019: Japanese Album, "The Fifth Season," "Fall In Love," and "Queendom"

Oh My Girl started the year with their first Japanese debut concert tour, held on January 4-6, 2019, in Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo. On January 9, the group released their debut Japanese album as a full group. Oh My Girl Japan's debut album debuted at number 1 on the Oricon daily album chart on January 8, 2019, selling 9,383 physical copies. It topped Billboard Japan's Top Albums Sales, selling 20,041 copies, and peaked at number 4 on Billboard Japan's Hot Albums.

On April 20, WM entertainment confirmed their comeback at the group's fan meeting. They were set to return with their first full-length studio album on May 8. On May 8, they released their first Korean studio album "The Fifth Season," along with its lead single "The Fifth Season (SSFWL)."

On July 3, Oh My Girl released their second Japanese album titled "Oh My Girl Japan 2nd Album." On July 30, WM Entertainment confirmed that the group would return on August 5 with a summer special album. The album "Fall In Love," a reissue of their first studio album, was released on August 5, along with the music video for the lead single "Bungee (Fall In Love)."

Starting in August, Oh My Girl participated in the reality competition show "Queendom." In the first round, they performed "Secret Garden" and finished in third place. The group then went on to win the second round with their cover of Lovelyz's "Destiny," taking first place. This cover was later released as a single on September 20. In the third round, they performed a remix of their song "Twilight," again taking first place, and it was also released as a single. On October 25, Oh My Girl released a single titled "Guerilla" as part of the "Queendom Final Comeback." On the show, Oh My Girl placed second overall, behind Mamamoo.

2020: "Eternally" and "Nonstop"

On January 8, 2020, Oh My Girl released their third Japanese studio album "Eternally" with four new songs: "Eternally," "Precious Moment," "Fly to the Sky," and "Polaris."

On April 27, the group released their seventh mini-album "Nonstop" with its title track of the same name.

For three consecutive months, Oh My Girl released Japanese releases. Their first release was the Japanese version of "Nonstop," which was released digitally on various platforms on June 29. Approximately a month after, on July 27, their second release, the Japanese single "Lemonade," was released digitally. Their third release, the Japanese single "Tear Rain," was released digitally on all music platforms on August 24.

At the 2020 Soribada Best K-Music Awards, held on August 13, 2020, Oh My Girl received the Bonsang award.

On August 16, Oh My Girl released a collaboration single with Pororo the Little Penguin titled "Supadupa" along with an original soundtrack version titled "Barabam." On August 21, they released the single "Rocket Ride," featuring Kian Silva and Mougleta.

On September 23, Oh My Girl announced on their Japanese website that they would release their first Japanese single, "Etoile / Nonstop Japanese ver.," on November 25. The single contains their previous three digital releases shown over the past three months: "Nonstop (Japanese ver.)," "Lemonade," and "Tear Rain," as well as a new single titled "Etoile," which was released digitally on music platforms on October 8, 2020. The single would have four versions, each containing its instrumental track. Additionally, there would be a special Anime Edition that would contain an English version of "Etoile." On October 15, the Korean version of "Etoile" was released digitally on all music platforms.
