Oksana Boturchuk: Ukrainian Paralympic Champion
Early Life and FamilyOksana Boturchuk was born into a sporting family in Nikopol, Ukraine. Her father was a master of sports in sambo, while her mother was a sprint runner and candidate for master of sports in track and field. It was her mother who introduced Oksana to her coach, Marina Afanasyevna Tsitsarikova. Oksana's younger sister, Elena, also pursued sports alongside her. Boturchuk is married to Sergei Nikolaevich Balaban, an MSМК in sambo and judo, and together they welcomed their daughter, Sofia.
Visual Impairment and Triumph
Boturchuk's life took a turn when she was involved in a car accident, resulting in a severe decline in vision. The accident left her with a temporary loss of sight, but her vision partially recovered. She now has a vision impairment of minus five and a half.
Sporting Achievements
Despite her visual challenges, Boturchuk's determination drove her to excel in track and field. She has won numerous international tournaments and was selected to join the national team.
Winter and Summer Championships
Her first major tournament was the 2006 Winter World Championships in Sweden, where she triumphed in the 60m dash, long jump, and 400m run. Later that year, she competed in the Summer World Championships in the Netherlands, where she won races in the 100m and 200m, setting championship records and nearly breaking world records.
World Cup and British Success
In 2007, Boturchuk was invited to the World Cup, where she emerged victorious in the 100m and 200m. She also won a tournament in the Czech Republic, setting two world records in the 100m and 200m, but these were later disqualified due to the absence of doping control. In 2008, she repeated her success in the 100m and 200m races in England.
Paralympic Glory
Boturchuk's sporting career reached its peak at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. She claimed three medals: gold in the 100m, silver in the 400m and 200m. Her preliminary time in the 400m (56.05) and final time (55.88) exceeded the standards for the Ukrainian Master of Sports.
Later Career and Recognition
Boturchuk trains at the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Center "Invasport" and holds a psychology degree from Dnipropetrovsk University. She has been honored with the Order of Merit, First Class (2016), Second Class (2012), and Third Class (2008).
