Olav Aukrust: A Norwegian Poet and Dialect Scholar
Early Life and FamilyOlav Aukrust was born in the Lom municipality of Oppland, Norway, in 1883. His parents, Ulav and Mari, were farmers in the traditional Gudbrandsdalen province. Olav's brother, Lars, became a local teacher and officer. His nephews included the economist Odd Aukrust and the poet and artist Kjell Aukrust.
Education and Linguistic Research
From a young age, Olav showed a keen interest in local dialects. He pursued studies and received a government grant for linguistic research. His work on the Nynorsk language made significant contributions to its development.
Literary Career
Aukrust wrote primarily in Nynorsk, and his notable works include "Himmelvarden" (1916), a poem that is considered his masterpiece. His writing explores themes of nature, rural life, and the human condition.
Anthroposophy and Health
In 1921, Aukrust joined the Anthroposophical Society. He traveled to Italy and Germany, where he was influenced by Rudolf Steiner's teachings. Aukrust suffered from tuberculosis, which contributed to his early death in 1929.
Legacy
In 1952, a bronze sculpture by Dyre Vaa was erected in Lom to honor Aukrust. His work continues to inspire generations of Norwegian poets and language enthusiasts.
