Knud Hamsun

Knud Hamsun, a renowned Norwegian writer, was one of the most influential literary figures of the early 20th century.

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Trøndelag, Hamsun pursued pedagogical studies at the age of 26. He dedicated himself to teaching from 1904 in the small town of Holmestrand, near Oslo.

Literary Career

In 1927, Hamsun retired from teaching to focus solely on writing. He authored his works in Landsmaal (Nynorsk), incorporating local dialects and the vocabulary of farmers, fishermen, and peasants. His characters were drawn with an intimate understanding of the region's local culture, infused with folk humor.

Psychological Novels

Hamsun excelled in the genre of psychological novels, most notably:
- "Mariana" (1908)
- "Three Friends" (1914)
- "Harald" (1915)
- "Pure Conscience" (1916)
The "Juvikings" Cycle

Hamsun's six-volume epic "Juvikings" (1918-1923) chronicles four generations of a Trøndelag peasant family from 1814 to 1920. The cycle mirrors the history of Norway during this period and includes the following novels:

- "In the Shadow of the Mountain" (1918)

- "Blind" (1919)
- "The Bridal Garland" (1920)
- "Fairy Tales" (1921)
- "In My Youth" (1921)
- "The Storm" (1923)
Later Works

Hamsun continued the "Juvikings" cycle with a trilogy written between 1929 and 1933:

- "Near Neighbor" (1929)

- "Ragnhild" (1931)
- "The Last Chapter" (1933)
