Andrzej J. Pisowicz: A Pioneer in Polish-Belarusian History
Early Life and EducationAndrzej Jacek Pisowicz was born in Elbląg, Poland, to a Belarusian father from Sharkushchyzna and a Polish mother from Łuka. After completing his secondary education, he pursued a degree in Philosophy and History at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, graduating in 1980.
Academic Career
Pisowicz's academic journey began with his PhD dissertation on Belarusian military formations during 1917-1923, which he defended at the University of Toruń in 1996. His habilitation thesis, titled "From White Ruthenians to Belarusians: Origins of the Belarusian National Idea," earned him a Dr. habil. degree from the same university in 2007.
He has taught history at various educational institutions, including a technical college in Supraśl and the University of Białystok. In 1997, he became a professor at the University of Białystok's Department of Belarusian Culture.
Research Focus
Pisowicz's research primarily revolves around Belarusian-Polish relations, as well as the ethnic and military history of Belarus. His work explores the multifaceted connections between the two nations and sheds light on the evolution of Belarusian identity.
Public Activism
Beyond academia, Pisowicz actively participated in the Belarusian student movement in Poland during the late 1980s. He also held leadership positions in the Belarusian Democratic Union, which represented the interests of the Belarusian minority in Poland.
Cultural and Academic Involvement
Pisowicz plays a prominent role in preserving and promoting Belarusian culture and history. He founded the radio station "Racją" in 1998, aimed at disseminating Belarusian culture. He serves as the chairman of the Belarusian Historical Society in Poland and holds memberships in various academic organizations.
He is a member of the editorial board of the Belarusian historical journal "Białoruskie Zeszyty Historyczne" and the "Polish Biographical Dictionary." His contributions to academia have made him a respected figure in both Poland and Belarus.
