Art Historian and Culture Theorist

Hans Belting, a renowned German art historian and culture theorist, made significant contributions to the study of image culture. Born in 1935, he earned his doctorate in Hamburg and went on to teach at the University of Heidelberg from 1969.

Teaching and Research

Belting's academic career spanned decades, with positions at prestigious universities worldwide. From 1980 to 1992, he taught at the University of Munich, and from 1992 to 2002 at the Institute for Art History and Media Theory in Karlsruhe. He also held teaching appointments at Harvard University, Columbia University, and the Collège de France.
