Biography of Oleg Skrypka
Oleg Skrypka is a Ukrainian musician, social activist, actor, vocalist, and songwriter, best known as the leader of the band 'Vopli Vidopliassova'. Born in Tajikistan, Oleg Skrypka comes from a family of Ukrainian immigrants. His mother has Russian roots, while his father is Ukrainian. He grew up in the Murmansk region of Russia.
Formation of Vopli Vidopliassova
In 1987, Oleg Skrypka graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and formed the band 'Vopli Vidopliassova' (also known as 'VV'). In the same year, the band became a member of the Kyiv rock club and won their first award at the Kyiv rock festival 'Rock Parade'. They also released their hit song 'Tantsi' ('Dances').
International Recognition
In 1990, Vopli Vidopliassova embarked on a tour of France and Switzerland, during which an article about the band was published in the prominent French newspaper Le Monde. From 1991 to 1996, Oleg Skrypka and his band lived in France, where they toured extensively. In 1996, Skrypka returned to Kyiv.
Continued Success
In 2000, Vopli Vidopliassova performed in Riga, London, and Moscow, as well as touring cities in Siberia. They also had concerts in Israel and Portugal in January 2002 and several shows in New York in February of the same year. In 2003, the band performed in Toronto.
Political Stance and Other Ventures
In 2005, Oleg Skrypka declined the title of People's Artist of Ukraine for political reasons. The mass awarding of the title was linked to the 14th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. Skrypka is also involved in translating songs by Viktor Tsoi into the Ukrainian language.
Television and Political Endeavors
In 2007, Oleg Skrypka placed second in the Ukrainian television dance project 'Dances with the Stars'. In 2009, a group of young activists proposed Skrypka as a candidate for the Ukrainian presidency, but he declined the offer.
