Oleg Sobchuk: A Musical Journey from Ternopil to the World Stage

Early Life and Education

Oleg Sobchuk was born in Ternopil, Ukraine, and developed a passion for music from a young age. Despite lacking formal musical training, he taught himself to play the guitar and pursued his musical aspirations. After completing high school, he briefly studied at the Halych College before graduating from Ternopil Pedagogical University with a degree in practical psychology and social education.

Formation of SKAI

In 2001, Sobchuk co-founded the rock band SKAI with Oleksandr Hryschuk. The band's name stands for "Starry Sky and I" and reflects Sobchuk's cosmic influences. SKAI's first performance took place on Valentine's Day 2001, and the band quickly gained recognition in their hometown of Ternopil.

Rise to Popularity

In 2005, SKAI's talent caught the attention of Eduard Klim, who offered them a contract with Lavina Music. This collaboration propelled the band to nationwide fame, with their songs receiving significant airplay and their concerts attracting large crowds. However, in 2016, Sobchuk decided to end the partnership with the label and focus on SKAI's independent growth.

Social Activism

Throughout his career, Sobchuk has used his platform to address important social issues. His songs have highlighted the spread of HIV/AIDS in Ukraine and the challenges faced by people living with the virus. He has also been involved in helping children with disabilities and orphans through his charity, "Give Light."

Wartime Support

With the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2014, Sobchuk became a vocal supporter of the Ukrainian military. He has organized fundraising events, purchased equipment and supplies, and performed on the front lines. He has also made it clear that SKAI will not perform in Russia until the war ends and the Putin regime is removed.

Award-Winning Career

Sobchuk and SKAI have received numerous awards over the years, including:

- MTV Europe Music Award for Best Ukrainian Act (2008)

- Ukrainian ShowBiz Award for Best Ukrainian Rock Group (2008)
- Golden Firebird Award for Best Ballad (2018)
