Biography of Oleksa Desnyak
Oleksa Desnyak was a Ukrainian Soviet writer and a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1939. He was born on March 4 (17), 1909, in a peasant family. In 1931, he graduated from the Chernihiv Institute of Social Education. Desnyak began publishing in 1928.
Literary Work
Desnyak was the author of novels, novellas, essays, and short stories. His novel "Battalions Crossed the Desna" (1937) is considered one of the best books about the Civil War in Ukraine. In the novel "Uday River" (1938), he depicted the life of Ukrainian collective farming peasants during the pre-war five-year plans and the atmosphere of creative work. The novella "Turgai Falcon" (1940) is dedicated to the hero of the Kazakh people, Amangeldy Imanov.
Role in Ukrainian Writers Union
After the liberation of the western Ukrainian territories in 1939, Desnyak became the head of the Lviv organization of the Union of Writers of Ukraine.
Death and Legacy
Desnyak died on May 25, 1942, in battle during World War II. He left behind a son, Alexander Rudenko-Desnyak (1936-2006), a Ukrainian and Russian journalist and public figure.
In 1979, a literary museum was opened in honor of Oleksa Desnyak's 70th birthday.
