Olga Aleksandrovna Sanfirova, a renowned Soviet pilot and squadron commander, was a trailblazing figure in the annals of aviation history.
Early Life and Education
Sanfirova was born on April 19 (May 2), 1917, in Samara, Russia. After completing her primary education, she pursued her passion for flying by joining the aeroclub in Kolomna, Moscow Oblast. The young Tatar woman subsequently moved to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she continued her studies.
Military Career
Inspired by the outbreak of World War II, Sanfirova enlisted in the Red Army in December 1941. She graduated from the Bataysk Military Aviation School for Pilots and in May 1942, joined the 46th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment as a pilot.
Heroic Service
As squadron commander of the 46th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, Sanfirova distinguished herself by leading 630 combat night missions. Her bravery and skill in attacking enemy forces and fortifications earned her widespread recognition.
Tragic Demise
On December 13, 1944, while returning from a daring mission, Sanfirova's aircraft was attacked. The valiant pilot met a heroic death in defense of her country. She was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin, among other prestigious decorations.
Legacy and Honors
Olga Sanfirova's legacy lives on as a testament to her courage and determination.
