Early Life and EducationIvan Babanov was born on January 4, 1911, in Ivanovo, Russia. He completed his primary education and attended the Ivanovaya Communist Party School.
Military Service and WWI
In 1933, Babanov joined the Red Army and served until 1935. He graduated from the Military School named after the All-Russian Central Executive Committee.
Civilian Life and VKP(b) Membership
Following his military service, Babanov worked in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and later as a foreman at the Melange Textile Factory. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1932.
WWII and Naval Aviation
With the outbreak of WWII in 1941, Babanov rejoined the Red Army and enrolled in the Naval Aviation. He completed a navigator course and joined the 1st Guards Mine-Torpedo Aviation Regiment of the Baltic Fleet.
Combat Missions and Valour
By September 1944, Babanov had flown 68 combat missions, sinking six transports, a tanker, and a German warship. He exhibited exceptional skill in guiding the torpedo bomber to its target and accuracy in torpedo releases.
Injury and Recognition
On August 13, 1944, while on a mission, Babanov's navigator's cabin was hit by an anti-aircraft shell. Despite his injuries, the pilot managed to land the damaged plane at a nearby airfield. At the hospital, Babanov received medical attention and learned that he had been awarded the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
Post-War Service and Retirement
Following the war, Babanov continued his military career in the Navy. He retired in 1946 with the rank of Senior Lieutenant and returned to Ivanovo, where he worked as an assistant foreman at the local textile factory.
Legacy and Final Resting Place
Ivan Babanov passed away on January 4, 1972. He was laid to rest at the Balino Cemetery in Ivanovo. His heroic contributions to the Soviet victory in WWII are forever etched in the annals of history.
