Biography of Ondrej Rigo

Ondrej Rigo was a Slovak serial killer and necrophile who committed heinous crimes in Bratislava, Munich, and Amsterdam between 1990 and 1992. He was convicted of 9 murders and 1 attempted murder, all of which targeted women. In addition to his psychopathic tendencies and necrophilia, Rigo derived pleasure from mutilating his victims.

Ondrej Rigo was born in 1955 in Modra, Slovakia. His childhood, along with his siblings, was not particularly happy as they ended up in an orphanage. By the time Rigo was 14, his mother had lost custody of them after their father's arrest. However, when his mother passed away in 2000, he claimed to have loved her dearly and shed tears for her.

Prior to his first murder, Rigo had been involved in criminal activities and had been convicted 11 times. As a teenager, he engaged in theft and had a troubled history with the law. At the time of his first murder, he had most recently been incarcerated from September to December 1989 in what was then Czechoslovakia. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Rigo took advantage of the freedom to travel and continued his crimes abroad.

Upon his release, he traveled to Vienna, where he obtained a fake passport under the name 'Nedo Ikic' since he did not possess a valid one. He later journeyed to Germany to meet his brother. In Bavaria, he sought asylum but was detained for two months by the German authorities for using counterfeit documents. After his escape, he arrived in Munich, where he would carry out his killings within a span of three months.

His first victim, Helena S., was discovered in her own apartment, which Rigo had presumably entered through a window, causing a fractured skull. It became evident that Rigo had engaged in sexual acts with the deceased woman, committed acts of necrophilia, looted her apartment, and fled the scene. This occurred in June 1990, and in August of the same year, he committed another brutal murder. This time, his victim was a 28-year-old woman whose body, like the previous one, showed signs of mutilation and necrophilia. Rigo also stole valuables from her residence.

In September, Rigo traveled to Amsterdam to visit his sister. Here, he killed a 58-year-old woman who lived alone with her cats by smashing her head with a five-kilogram stone. Once again, the murderer satisfied his sexual desires, looted the house, and fled the scene. The following day, he went to Bratislava, where he abused an 88-year-old woman, a resident of a nursing home, and killed her in her sleep with a blow to the head. The elderly woman's death resulted in the loss of 4,000 crowns and ancient church books from the nursing home.

On January 3, 1991, Rigo committed a double murder, taking the lives of a 40-year-old woman and her teenage son. Almost a month later, on January 31, he attacked Jana B., a 31-year-old artist. Although she was injured, she courageously fought back against the assailant, becoming the only survivor from his attacks. Rigo retreated through an open window.

However, he soon killed again, this time targeting a 79-year-old woman who posed no significant physical resistance. In July 1991, Rigo assaulted, raped, and left a 22-year-old woman to die in Bratislava. Although she initially survived the attack, she succumbed to her injuries 18 days later.

In March 1992, Rigo murdered a 67-year-old woman from Bratislava, marking his final victim on the gruesome list.

Ondrej Rigo was arrested by the Slovak criminal police on March 4, 1992, just a few hours after his last murder. He was identified by Jana B., the survivor, and the results of forensic examinations further incriminated him.

The trial lasted for 10 days, and on December 7, 1994, Ondrej Rigo received a life sentence. A psychiatric examination revealed his psychopathic traits, and his extremely low IQ made any chances of rehabilitation nonexistent.

In 2006, Slovak writer Dominik Dan published a detective novel based on Ondrej Rigo's story.

Rigo is currently held in Leopoldov Prison in Slovakia, and he will be eligible to apply for parole no earlier than 2019.
