Early Life and CareerOscar Washington Tabárez was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on March 4, 1947. His given name, Oscar, is of German origin and reflects his father's affinity for names starting with the letter "W." Tabárez's siblings were named Walter and Williams.
From an early age, Tabárez displayed a passion for football. He began his playing career at Sud América in 1964. Throughout his career, he represented various teams, including Sportivo Italiano, Wanderers, Fénix, and Puebla in Mexico.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 1979, Tabárez embarked on a prolific coaching career. His first notable success came in 1987 when he led Peñarol to victory in the Copa Libertadores. He went on to coach several clubs in Uruguay, Argentina, Italy, and Colombia.
Uruguay National Team
Tabárez is best known for his two stints as head coach of the Uruguay national team. During his first tenure from 1988 to 1990, he guided "La Celeste" to a second-place finish in the 1989 Copa América and qualification for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
In 2006, he returned to the national team and enjoyed significant success. Under his leadership, Uruguay reached the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and won the 2011 Copa América.
Honors and Recognition
Tabárez's achievements have earned him numerous accolades. He was named South American Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, he received the FIFA Order of Merit, FIFA's highest honor, for his contributions to football.
Health Issues
In 2016, it was reported that Tabárez had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. The condition initially affected his mobility, and he required crutches and an electric wheelchair. However, he continued to coach Uruguay at the 2016 Copa América.
