Osipov Gabrilowitsch was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and began his musical studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1888. He studied piano under Anton Rubinstein, composition under Alexander Glazunov and Anatoly Lyadov.
Refinement in Vienna
In 1894, Gabrilowitsch moved to Vienna to continue his studies under Theodor Leschetizky (piano) and Karl Navratil (composition). He made his debut as a pianist in Berlin in 1896 and embarked on extensive tours throughout Europe and the United States.
Marriage and Concert Career
In 1909, Gabrilowitsch married Clara Clemens, the daughter of Mark Twain. The couple moved to the United States in 1914, and Gabrilowitsch gained international acclaim for his "historical concerts," which showcased the evolution of the piano concerto from Bach to contemporary composers. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Chopin's Spanish works.
Conductor and Composer
In the United States, Gabrilowitsch transitioned into a successful conducting career. He served as music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1918 to 1935, concurrently leading the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1928. Beyond conducting, Gabrilowitsch composed numerous works for piano, cello and piano, as well as romances and songs.
