Biography of Osman Orsal
Osman Orsal is a Turkish photojournalist based in Istanbul, Turkey. He is associated with the international news agency 'Reuters'. On May 28, 2013, Orsal covered anti-government protests in Turkey, and several of his photographs gained widespread recognition.
Highlighting the Essence of Turkish Protests
Among his notable images is one that depicts a young woman in a red dress, whose name remains unknown, being targeted by tear gas sprayed by a police officer. According to foreign press, Orsal's photographs captured the essence of the ongoing situation in Turkey at that time – the protests from demonstrators dissatisfied with the government's policies, as well as the harsh repression by law enforcement authorities. The viral nature of these photographs led to their use on protest banners by the demonstrators themselves.
An Act of Violence
On May 29, Orsal was injured by police officers when he was struck on the head with a gas canister. A photograph of the Turkish photojournalist with a bloodied face also gained significant attention in the international press.
