Biography of Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado

Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado was a Cuban political figure and lawyer. He began his political career at the age of 16 in the left-wing student movement and later joined the People's Socialist Party. During the fight against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista, he became involved in the Revolutionary Movement. In late 1958, he was arrested and exiled from the country.

After the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Dorticós Torrado became the Minister for Revolutionary Legality. From July 1959 to December 1976, he served as the President of the Republic of Cuba. In December 1976, he became a member of the State Council. In March 1962, he also became a member of the Secretariat of the National Leadership of the Unified Party of the Socialist Revolution in Cuba.

Dorticós Torrado received an honorary doctorate in law from Moscow State University. However, he tragically took his own life, unable to bear the death of his spouse.
