Biography of Otto Happel
Otto Happel is a German entrepreneur and billionaire, currently best known as the co-owner of GEA Group AG, one of the largest industrial conglomerates in Frankfurt. He owns twenty percent of the company's shares, which were previously held by MG Technologies.
Early Years and Family Business
The history of GEA Group AG dates back to 1920 when Otto's father founded Gesellschaft fur Entstaubungs-Anlagen, a family enterprise. Within a few years, the company achieved success with the invention of elliptical pipes by Otto Happel Sr.
In 1948, the founder of the company passed away, and his wife took over the reins. Elizabeth Happel led the company until 1975 when her son, Otto Happel Jr., assumed the management position.
Transformations and Growth
During Elizabeth Happel's tenure, significant changes occurred within the company, particularly in the production process. In 1950, the company started manufacturing its first capacitors for coal enterprises. In 1963, the company changed its name to FUK Klimator.
Three years into Otto Happel Jr.'s leadership, the company began producing plate heat exchangers, marking a significant milestone in its development. In 1989, the company transformed into the major conglomerate GEA AG, with its headquarters in Bochum, Germany.
Expansion and Innovations
In 1991, GEA AG acquired the GBS production line and started manufacturing plate heat exchangers with increased capacity. A year later, GEA Klimator was formed through the merger of GEA and FUK Klimator.
Under Happel's leadership, the conglomerate began inventing its own technologies and producing heat exchangers for electromachines and diesel engines.
Continued Success
By 1999, GEA Group AG became part of the Metallgesellschaft holding and started manufacturing plate packs. In 2005, following the merger of GEA AG and Metallgesellschaft, the holding was renamed GEA Group AG.
Today, GEA Group AG is a leading conglomerate in the production of high-class equipment. Despite his vast business responsibilities, Otto Happel prefers spending his time on extended walks on his yacht rather than engaging in frequent disputes in various organizational meetings. He embodies the words of MG Technologies' President, Kajo Neukirchen, who stated that in the modern world, one can either be a businessman or an angel but not both simultaneously.
