Early Life and Education
Polikarp Osipovich Gukasov was born in Russia, an Armenian by ethnicity. He graduated from the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages in 1890. Subsequently, he pursued studies in physics and mathematics at the Imperial Novorossiysk University in Odessa and the University of Leipzig in 1894.
Petrochemical Career
Gukasov's expertise in geology earned him a doctorate in natural sciences. In 1899, he moved to London to represent his family's petroleum business in Europe. He founded the shipbuilding company "Balting Trading Co." and oversaw the "Pella" plant in Petrograd during World War I.
Post-Revolution and Emigration
After the October Revolution, Gukasov emigrated to France. He founded the shipbuilding company "Les Petroles d'Outre-Mer" for oil tankers. Notably, he established the newspaper "Vozrozhdenie" (1925-1940), which played a significant role in the Russian diaspora.
Founding and Philanthropy
Gukasov chaired the Russian Central National Association and provided funding for the Russian Foreign Congress in Paris. He established the Armenian Gukasyan Foundation and the literary-political journal "Vozrozhdenie" (1949-1974).
