Early Life and EducationHermann Mark was an Austrian physical chemist specializing in polymer science and X-ray scattering. He studied chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology.
Academic Career
In 1938, Mark received his habilitation in physical chemistry from the University of Vienna. Two years later, he became the group leader at the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin-Dahlem.
In 1943, Mark was appointed professor at the German Technical University in Prague, a branch of the Czech Technical University. From 1946 to 1972, he served as professor of theoretical and physical chemistry at the University of Graz.
Research and Legacy
Mark's research focused on the structure and properties of polymers. He used X-ray scattering to determine the molecular structure of synthetic and natural polymers, including cellulose, rubber, and proteins.
In 1972, Mark became the chairman of the Institutes for Fine X-ray Structure. His work played a significant role in the development of polymer science and the understanding of the molecular basis of materials.
