Early Life and Education
Vladimir Ivanovich Apanasevich was born on November 27, 1932, in the village of Staroselie, Dokshitsy District, Vitebsk Oblast, Belarus. He hailed from a peasant family. After completing his studies at Belarusian State University (BSU) in 1954, Apanasevich embarked on a career at the Institute of Physics, where he became one of the first disciples of Academician B. I. Stepanov.
Scientific Career
Apanasevich's research revolved around laser physics, nonlinear optics, and spectroscopy, particularly the theory of light interaction with matter. His pioneering work led him to propose a novel criterion for classifying secondary radiation based on quantum theory of radiation. Apanasevich was also among the first to extensively employ the density matrix method in studying light-matter interactions, advocating for the use of balanced kinetic equations. He explored non-Markovian effects in the interaction of intense laser radiation with matter particles.
Apanasevich's contributions extended to the development of the theory of parametric light scattering, including four-wave mixing, and wavefront inversion. In the realm of laser and nonlinear optics, he made significant contributions to the theory of Raman scattering, generation of ultrashort laser pulses, laser mode synchronization, two-photon light absorption, and light-induced diffraction.
Leadership and Honors
During his tenure as deputy director of the Institute of Physics in 1978, Apanasevich's leadership proved invaluable. Following Stepanov's passing in 1987, he became the institute's director, a position he held until 1998. Since then, he has held the esteemed title of Honorary Director. Under his guidance, 21 candidate and 5 doctoral dissertations were successfully defended.
Apanasevich's exceptional research earned him numerous accolades. He was awarded the State Prize of the Byelorussian SSR (1978) for his groundbreaking work on "Spectral and Optical Properties of Matter in Strong Laser Radiation Fields." For his contributions to the "Physical Foundations of Dynamic Holography and New Methods of Spatial Transformation of Light Beams," he received the State Prize of the USSR in 1982. Apanasevich's achievements were further recognized with the Order of the Badge of Honor (1979) and the Order of Honor (2010).
