Early Life and Education

Otto Krümmel was born in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel, Germany. He initially pursued medical studies but later switched to geography and physical sciences. He studied under Oskar Peschel in Leipzig, August Petermann and Karl Zeebach in Göttingen, and Adolf Bastian and Heinrich Kiepert in Berlin.

Academic Career

In 1876, Krümmel earned his doctorate in Göttingen and in 1878 defended his doctoral dissertation in geography. From 1882 to 1883, he worked at the German Naval Meteorological Station in Hamburg, where his work on oceanography under Georg Neumayer sparked his interest in hydrography.

Professorship in Kiel

In 1883, Krümmel was appointed as a professor in Kiel. He served as the university's rector from 1897 to 1898 and also lectured at the naval academy. In 1889, he participated in the German plankton expedition in the Atlantic Ocean.

Oceanography and Geography Studies

In 1911, Krümmel became a professor of geography in Marburg. His research primarily focused on oceanography, but he also gave lectures on meteorology, climatology, geomorphology, anthropogeography, regional geography, and ethnography.

Major Contributions and Recognition

Krümmel's most significant contribution was his comprehensive work on oceanography, which gained him international recognition. He was a member of numerous geographical societies, including those in Berlin, Amsterdam, London, and Rome. He also served on the Committee for the Investigation of the German Sea and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.
