In 1948, Aaltonen made his mark on the world stage at the London Olympics. He emerged as a dominant force, winning three gold medals in the team all-around, pommel horse, and vault. In the pommel horse event, he tied with fellow countrymen Veikko Huhtanen and Heikki Savolainen, leading to a historic decision where all three gymnasts were awarded gold medals.
