Early Life and Club Career
Per Zetterberg, born in Falkenberg, Sweden, began his football journey at the age of 8, joining the youth team of his hometown club Falkenbergs. At 16, Zetterberg's talent caught the attention of Belgian giants Anderlecht, who signed him in 1986. After making his debut for the first team in 1989, Zetterberg spent the majority of his professional career with Anderlecht, leaving the club only for brief spells at Charleroi and Olympiacos. He became an iconic figure for the Belgian club.
On-Field Success
Known for his exceptional skills as a central midfielder, Zetterberg was renowned for his elegant and fair play, earning the Fair Play Prize on several occasions. Remarkably, he received only three yellow cards throughout his entire career. His exceptional performances earned him the prestigious Belgian Golden Shoe award twice and the Swedish Golden Ball award once.
International Career
Zetterberg represented Sweden 30 times at the international level. However, in 1999, he abruptly retired from international football due to conflicts with the coaching staff and his management of diabetes. Despite expressing a desire to return to the team for UEFA Euro 2000, his request was denied.
