Pat Benatar, born Patricia Andrzejewski, is an American singer who gained international fame in the late 1980s with her hit song "We Belong" from the album "Tropico". A year later, she became famous for the title track of the movie "The Legend of Billie Jean".
Early Life
Pat Benatar was born in 1953 in the United States. At the age of 17, she began professionally pursuing vocal training by enrolling in the New York Conservatory. However, she soon grew tired of the traditional teaching methods and decided to quit. She worked at a bank for a while and then became a "singing waitress". In 1975, she was invited to sing at a cabaret where she imitated famous celebrities such as Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross. It was during this time that she was noticed by producer Rick Newman, who gave her the stage name "Benatar" and guided her towards a more rock-oriented vocal style. She joined a group led by guitarist and composer Neil Giraldo, who later became her husband.
Music Career
In 1978, Benatar signed a contract with Chrysalis Records, and the label assigned her a new producer, Michael Chapman, who had previously worked with bands like Blondie and The Knack. Her first album, "In The Heat Of The Night," immediately reached the Top 20, and two singles from the album made it into the Top 30. Her next album, "Crimes Of Passion," was produced by Keith Olsen and reached the prestigious Top 3. This album had a more pop sound compared to her previous rock-oriented work. Her third album, "Precious Time," topped the American charts throughout the summer of 1981. The successful streak continued with the album "Get Nervous" in 1982, followed by "Live From Earth," which featured the international hit single "Love Is A Battlefield" and an innovative music video for its time.
Later Career and Personal Life
In late 1984, the song "We Belong" from the album "Tropico" became an international hit. A year later, Benatar gained further recognition with the title track of the movie "The Legend of Billie Jean". Despite her success, Benatar was feeling exhausted from recording and touring, so she decided to take a break from her career and focus on her family. However, in 1988, she made a comeback with the highly successful album "Wide Awake In Dreamland". Benatar once declared, "My life is forever devoted to rock and roll," and she has stayed true to her principles. In the mid-90s, she turned down lucrative offers to appear in mainstream films and refused to pose for fashion magazines. She continues to record music, as evidenced by her album "Innamorata" released in the summer of 1997. However, she tries to avoid extensive tours as she remains committed to her married life.
