Pat Hingle was an actor and graduate of the New York Actors Studio, who gained recognition as the protégé of legendary director Elia Kazan. He made his first appearance on the big screen in Kazan's film "On the Waterfront". This was followed by his role in Kazan's second film, "Splendor in the Grass". Hingle then began receiving offers for roles, increasingly in Westerns and often in supporting roles.
However, his most famous role is considered to be Commissioner Gordon in all four blockbusters about Batman. On television, Hingle mainly appeared in mini-series and TV movies such as "Truman", "Elvis", "Noon Wire", and "Of Mice and Men". Hingle was much more well-known in the theater world, with twenty-two Broadway productions to his credit, including "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "JB", and "That Championship Season".
He starred in various films throughout his career, including "Elvis" (1979), "Sudden Impact" (1983), "Batman" (1989), "The Grifters" (1990), "Batman Returns" (1992), "The Quick and the Dead" (1995), "Batman Forever" (1995), "Tall Tale" (1996), "Batman & Robin" (1996), and "Shaft" (2000).
Pat Hingle passed away on January 3, 2009, at his home in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, where he had been living in his final years. The cause of his death was leukemia (myelodysplasia was diagnosed in November 2006).
